Reading & Phonics

At Conway we promote a variety of reading approaches to help all our learners.

Pupils learn lots of stories off by heart in the Early Years and are taught to read by following our systematic phonics strategy. We use the  'letters and sounds' programme and follow government guidance on this. Pupils are screened in Year 1 and Year 2 to ensure that they meet the required standards expected nationwide. Our results are very good with over 80% of Year 1 pupils achieving the pass mark required.

Every morning pupils are encouraged to come in to school early to read with their classmates, supported by teachers and teaching assistants. Pupils engage in guided reading sessions daily in EYFS and KS1. Opportunities to apply reading skills are taken during afternoon sessions too when children are encouraged to read further information about topics they are learning about.
