Health Month Assembly

June has been a super busy month at Conway with being health month, sadly it has come to an end.  The whole school came together to celebrate in an assembly, which reflected on the past month as well as having Sonia and Stuart from The Anton Reid Foundation to raise awareness of the organisation  and  the defibrillator. We also had many, delighted children winning raffle prizes as well as having the grand finale of the juicing bike. It has been fantastic month, enjoyed by all at Conway!

 Cooking Club

Part of the health month Ann and Rosie from the kitchen have been holding a cooking club.  Some of the year 5 children have been taking part in this. This week the children made vegetable pasta and chocolate cracknel.

Cultural Dance Performances

This week in school we have been celebrating dance from around the world, the children have been  learning about different faiths and cultures. Year 5 looked at Morris dancing which is an English folk dance, it is based on rhythmic steps with the dancers holding bells or handkerchiefs. The dances were performed in assemblies sharing the different dances with the rest of the school.  Our dancers did us proud!

Malvern Trip

Year 5 had a wonderful trip to Malvern this half term, which was part of the Topic Curriculum comparing local areas.  The children really enjoyed the delightful scenery of Malvern walking around the tranquil town and then going to Malvern Hills.  Where they accomplished a very tiring journey walking up to the Beacon and enjoying the magnificent view from the top.  Everyone had fun including the teachers!

Science Investigations

We have been taking part in different science investigations in our TTG groups, the last few weeks. TTG2 looked at finding out if the amount of batteries (cells) effect the brightness of a bulb.  The children had a go at making a simple circuit and adding batteries. TTG1 were investigating how different temperatures effect the speed of dissolving salt.  In TTG3 they looked at if the size of your bicep effects how far you  can throw a javelin.  All three groups had fun taking part in these investigations and comparing the results with each other.

This has been a very interesting topic both the children and staff have had some amazing lessons going back in history learning about the lives of the Ancient Greeks. Both year 5 classes worked hard in creating powerpoint presentations and delivered them to their classes.

Anti Bullying Sessions

Year 5 have been taking part in anti bullying workshops for the last few weeks. Both classes took part in three weekly sessions looking at different types of bullying. In session one the children explored what cyber bullying is , how it takes place  and the effects of this.  Session two the children looked at assertive behaviour, again exploring feelings from all sides e. g  how does the bully feel? how does the victim feel? The children worked in groups and acted out different scenarios. The last session was focussed on making a pledge to stand up to bullying children worked in groups working on scenarios on how to make a stand against bullying.

This half term in year 5 the science topic has been forces, the children have been learning about different types of forces and how they work.  They also looked at gravity, friction and the effects of air resistance, by taking part in different investigations in their TTG groups.
