Wider Opening of Conway Primary School

8th June 2020

Dear Parent/Carer,

Wider Opening – Pupils in Y1

Thank you to everyone who contacted us to let us know what your thoughts are about your Year 1 child returning to school. About 40% of parents who have responded are still undecided about this, so we would like to share more information with you about what we think the provision will look like.

The first thing that we need to emphasise is that our school has been open to key worker families and vulnerable groups.

We are now planning on opening our schools wider to the following groups:

Week Beginning 15 June - Year 1

Week Beginning 22 June – Reception

Week Beginning 29 June – Year 6

These year groups have been identified by the government.

But this will only be able to happen if all risk assessments are completed and we have everything in place to open safely.  We will continue to follow DfE guidance.

There are a few things that we are able to confirm:

  • The start and end times of the school day will need to be staggered for different groups to minimise the number of people on the school site at any time so your child may start and finish school at a different time than they would normally.
  • Schools will not be able to offer breakfast or after school care.
  • Children will not be based in their normal classrooms or be taught by their normal teacher.
  • Children will either attend morning or afternoon sessions – it will not be a full day.
  • If your child is currently attending fulltime they will continue to attend fulltime.

Social Distancing

A number of parents have raised concerns in their feedback about how social distancing can be maintained in school.

  • The children will be put into groups of no more than 10 and will stay in these groups throughout the school session.
  • Each child will have their own work station, desk and chair with everything they need.
  • Children will not be sharing stationary or toys.
  • Children will sit at a desk which is 2m from their classmates and their teacher.
  • Children will be encouraged not to make contact with each other physically.
  • Children will have their own sets of everyday equipment such as pencils and whiteboards to make sure they are not sharing items.
  • Teachers will support children to learn and practice the new behaviours and routines that will be needed to help everyone to stay as safe as possible.
  • However, we cannot guarantee that children will remain at least 2m apart from each other at all times. This is especially difficult the younger the children are.
  • Children of key workers will remain in their current groups as they are full time.

Social distancing for adults

  • Social distancing will be in place at the start and end of the school day.
  • Start and end times will be staggered for each group to minimise the number of people on the school site at any time, and families will need to keep 2m apart at all times.
  • There are very strict restrictions on visitors to schools so schools will communicate with parents online or by phone.
  • Parents will not be allowed into the school building unless, and only in exceptional circumstances, they have a pre-booked appointment to see one of the senior leaders (Ms Yasmin, Mrs Mills or Ms Williams) or Mrs Bowater.
  • Only one parent may bring a child to school or collect them at the end of the day.

One possible model which we are considering is outlined below, but please bear in mind that this is not final. The final model for the school will be finalised on by Thursday 11th June.

This is only a draft model and may be different by Thursday 11th June. We hope that this information will help you to decide whether or not you will be sending your child to school. It would help our schools greatly with their planning to have a clearer idea of the number of children to expect in each year group when they reopen.

On Tuesday 9th June staff from the school will call Year 1 parents/carers to get your responses if you haven’t already told us.  If you said no previously and have changed your mind, please contact Mrs Bowater and let her know.

On Wednesday 10th June we will be posting on the school website further guidance on what children should bring to school, what they should wear, what learning they will do and behaviour expectations.

Parents/carers of Reception and Year 6 children will be contacted week beginning  15th to find out if you would like your child to return to school.

Best Wishes

Tania Yasmin
