What is the Rights Respecting Schools Award?
The Rights Respecting Schools Award is an initiative run by UNICEF. It encourages schools to place the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of its ethos and culture to improve well-being and develop every child's talents and abilities to their full potential.
A Rights Respecting school promotes the values of respect, dignity and non-discrimination. The four key areas of impact for children at a Rights Respecting school are:
United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)
The UNCRC is a human rights treaty which sets out the civil, political, economic, social, health and cultural rights of a child. The convention has 54 articles that cover all aspects of a child's life. It also explains how adults and governments must work together to make sure all children can enjoy their rights.
